It looks like Joe will be the Defender and Brandon will be the Striker if he's still being a Ranger. We'll need a Leader (healer) and another striker or a controller still.

Actually I was thinking of playing a Rune Priest [PHB3] (healer/controller) if eric wants to play a striker.

Keith, I know that dungeoneering isnt a Paladin Class skill but I was wndering if i could take it as one if i write a compelling reason to allow me to have it in my backstory. Let me know. Also what is the campaign setting so I can write a backstory?

Cool. Rune Priest looks interested from the little that I've read of it, something of a buff/healer class which is useful. Does it have Channel Divinity as a class feature out of curiosity?

There's a couple of ways to go about doing this in game:

  • Skill Training feat, gives you training in any skill, even cross class.
  • Class-Specific Multiclass feat: I'll take this opportunity to direct you to the Multiclassing section of feats on Page 208. Actually that's the entire multiclassing section. Multiclassing has been drastically streamlined, no more is it about preferred classes and exp penalties and whatnot. Want to multiclass? You choose this feat, get training in a skill from the list, and a special bonus from choosing the feat, as well as get access to several feats down the list that allow you to sub in class skills. This seems very neat, and customizable, so I'd recommend everyone take a look at it.

For example in your case you could multiclass Ranger ("Warrior of the Wild" feat, assuming you have Str or Dex 13) and gain one class skill from the Ranger list (in this case, Dungeoneering) as well as you can use the ranger's Hunter Quarry feature, as well as opening some avenues for future ranger-y style goodness.

However if neither of those appeal to you and you've already taken your first level feat, if you write a backstory I don't see a problem with you swapping that with another class skill. Just wanted to see if you knew about these ones. Speaking of...

To be determined. 4E seems very much like an Ebberon style game, there's all sorts of Warforged and stuff in there. Not sure if there's a sourcebook for Ebberon for 4E yet (haven't looked) but tentatively feel free to set it in this setting if it helps you flesh our your character

Sorry, no Channel Divinity. Instead they have this weird power called Rune Master. Every time you use one of your abilities you choose one of two rune classes (Kind of like warrior stances or DK presences I guess?). The rune chosen gives an effect to your party (see below) and alters your ability to be either more aggressive or defensive.

Rune Power:
Rune of Destruction - Your allies gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls to enemies who are adjacent to you.
Rune of Protection - While adjacent to you your allies gain resist 2 (4 at 11th, 6 at 21st) to all damage.

The rune priest, from what I have read, is a mediocre healer + striker combo. It is a melee controller/buffer/debuffer. I do have some healing if needed though.

I checked the book list. There doesn't seem to be an ebberon yet but yeah I'm sure we all know at the rate WoTC is pushing out books like trailer park babbys we'll see 14 ebberon rulebooks by next year at this time.

There is a Faerun ruleset, so lets just say we'll be doing Forgotten Realms at the moment since you can have a fairly generic setting within.

Ah cool. Just thinking that the Channel Divinity classes have some decent feats that use it based on gods they worship.

I'm probably going to play a rogue this go-around, and I plan to build it as a chaotic neutral alignment. Going to be fun on the bun!

The alignment system has been modified a little bit since 3.5. Instead of the 9 choices like before it has been changed to:
Good - Protecting the weak from those who would dominate or kill them is just the right thing to do.
Lawful Good - An ordered society protexts us from evil.
Unaligned - Just let me go about my business.
Evil - It is my right to claim what others possess.
Chaotic Evil - I don't care what I have to do to get what I want.

For the sake of our campaign Keith has limited us to Good, Lawful Good, or Unaligned. More in depth descriptions can be found on pages 19-20 of the phb1.

At the moment I am looking at playing an archer specialized ranger of Unaligned alignment. I will read more into things though and may change my mind over the next couple days.

If that is the case I will be playing as Unaligned.

Campaign setting has been updated, see the first post. We'll be playing in Forgotten Realms. Note that this doesn't affect much but feel free to draw on that lore for your character.

I felt that in previous games that the party characters didn't really know each other. I feel that more inner-party roleplaying (between players that is) should occur. To this end one of the things that I would like done in this thread is for your party to create a background together. I will assume that your characters have set up in the tent-and-wagon city around Eastland below, and that you know each other. The details are up to you. Discuss in this thread, including the following things:

  • Your character's personal history
  • How you met with this group
  • Your character's general dreams and ambitions
  • How your character "meshes" with the individual members of the group, who they like, and who they conflict with.
  • Any other details of interest.

This will let you guys have a reasonable back story and not "hey guys we just met we should kill that dragon!!"

It's good that your party has been tentatively created. Obviously things are not set in stone. However there is one thing that I should mention that can become important. Unless Rune Priest has it as a class feature, I've noticed that none of the characters have the Ritual Casting feat. This feat allows you to use Rituals (Chapter 10 p.296) which are useful non-combat things. This is also the only way to create magic items using the Enchant Item Ritual, and to get disenchanting materials (used in item creation) using the Disenchant Item feat.

The player that will have this ability definitely benefits from having Knoweldge: Arcana, Religion and perhaps Nature as the benefits from rituals improve from doing this.

I didn't bother to edit it, ignore the run on sentences and sentence fragments

The small village of Minara-Djerad once lay between Methmere Lake and Methwood on the border of the human nation of Chessenta and the Dragonborn nation of Tymanther, until it was brutally destroyed by a roving band of Orcs on their way to join the empire of the great Orc King Obould.

Born into a life of what humans would call hardship, but to the Dragonborn called simple, Ssarick Torrin and Balasar Torrin were taught honesty and integrity, virtues often abandoned in Faerun. While playing with some of the other children in the Methwood, Ssarick caught sight of smoke billowing from the direction of their village. Running with all the speed they could muster, the children raced towards the village. Something or someone called to Ssarick, telling him to stop. Grabbing his brother, Ssarick watched as the other children bolted into the clearing where they were cut down mercilessly by the Orcs.

Ssarick battled his own inner fury, and his brother's desperate attempts to break free of his grasp until the orcs had left the area. Together the brothers entered the clearing where the bodies of their friends and family littered the ground like discarded waste. The houses that they had lived and played in were little more than charred husks, some desperately clinging onto the shapes they once held.

In a daze Ssarick and Balasar approached the familiar, unmoving bodies of their parents. Without hesitation, nor conversation the pair raced out of the town in the direction of the orcish band. Not ten minutes down the road they came across a strange sight. Laying in the center of the road were two flawless weapons. A heavy Warhammer, accompanied by a wooden shield, which Ssarick found fit his grip perfectly, was the weapon he chose. Balasar wrapped his smaller hands around the haft of a heavy maul.

As Ssarick turned to continue his pursuit, his brother stopped him, pointing up towards the mountains that lay to the south. Standing on a ridge overlooking the trail they stood on was a tall, proud warrior with a war hammer in one hand and a cudgel in the other.

A voice echoed in both their minds, "strike true brave warriors. Saint Cuthbert will be watching over you."
With that the figure faded away as if he had never been there. The only thing that mattered to the brothers at that moment however, was that the weapons remained. When the Orcs made camp for the night the two brothers exploded from the shadows and into their midst. Though they were outnumbered ten to one, for some reason the axes and swords of the vicious beasts were unable to hit the brothers, who cleaved through their ranks.

When the final body of the Orcish enemy hit the ground, twitching involuntarily from the multiple crushed vertebrae from maul strikes, the brothers found themselves feeling lost. The vengeance they had felt lasted far to brief a time and with their home destroyed, they had nothing left.
It was in this time of great need that Saint Cuthbert appeared to them again. It was in his purpose that they found theirs. They found solace in the wisdom that he preached, and the zeal and discipline of his order granted them a cause. They now seek to stomp out evil wherever it lies, to prevent horrors like those they had suffered through and to continue to improve their own wisdom and teach others around them.

The celebration at hand is the perfect opportunity for the pair to continue spreading the beliefs that they had accepted as their own.

Good job Joe/Brandon, thank you for writing that up (and for keeping the first post in this thread populated).

We'll need Eric/Cavan's stories, how they fit in with this group at least. Also any useful party skills like in the first post of the thread.

Edit: Always down for crushed vertebrae.
